Challenge
Awake Labs set out to commercialize hospital-based IP by developing a wearable tool that could help track and manage anxiety in real time. Built on research from Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital, the system needed to be translated into a usable product that could support individuals with cognitive disabilities, particularly those on the autism spectrum.
Objective
As UX and product lead, I worked closely with Awake Labs’ founding team to design and prototype the mobile experience that paired with a wearable biosensor. Drawing on my background in educational psychology and seven years of teaching experience with autistic individuals, I helped ensure the interface and interactions were appropriate, intuitive, and inclusive for neurodiverse users.
Outcome
We launched a functional MVP that connected wearable heart rate data with a real-time “Anxiety Meter” display. The tool was piloted in clinical environments and laid the groundwork for future integration with Awake Labs’ broader tracking platform, Reveal Stories.

Impact
The project helped move the technology from early research toward commercialization, with a focus on autism and cognitive accessibility. It supported Awake Labs in securing funding, validating usability, and forming a platform that continues to support individuals, families, and caregivers in real-world care settings.
